Cocos Monkey

project details

Client Courtney aka Coco had a clear vision for her Apparel Brand…

Project Description: Strategic Brand Evolution

Every so often, a client seeks more than just a logo; they seek a design strategy that can anchor their entire business. Courtney approached me with a clear vision: an island-inspired athleisure brand that would define the Key West brand identity for her new brick-and-mortar boutique.

The goal was to blend her personal story—a tribute to her beloved rescue, Molly (Coco & Monkey)—with a professional graphic representation of a Boxer dog.

The Challenge: Strength Meets “Island Life”

The core challenge represented within this design case study was striking the perfect balance between a laid-back island vibe and the strength of the Boxer silhouette. We focused on:

  • Brand Consistency: Developing a versatile visual language that maintains readability across diverse merchandise, from performance wear to store signage.

  • Local Significance: Ensuring the identity resonated as a “local favorite” in the competitive Key West market.

  • Strategic Growth: Building a flexible brand framework that allowed Coco’s Monkey to evolve from a single idea into a recognizable local powerhouse.

Wireframe sketches exploring different logo variations for Coco's Monkey, showcasing font, color, and layout options.

In the beginning...

We knew the name and that Coco's Monkey was inspired by a Boxer dog named Molly. From there, we explored silhouettes, various fonts, colors, and arrangements – a crucial step in any branding project. As you can see, the winning formula can be as simple as a click or a flip, or the choice between a script and a serif font.

Evolution...

Back in 2015, this logo set started with the icon, the logotype, and that main oval shape. Over time, a round badge design (not even in the original plan!) became a real workhorse for 'em. So, in 2021, we made it official – that badge is now the star of the show.

Silhouette Savvy

See how that main badge works its magic on different backgrounds? The trick is keepin' that Boxer dog silhouette nice and dark, no matter the color behind it. Little details like that? That's what sets a good design apart.

Color Flexibility: Keeping It Simple & Bold.

Designing for apparel goes beyond just the first look. We gotta make sure those graphics work on different colored shirts, and that printers can easily swap inks to keep costs down. This design? It's a prime example of how we make that happen without losing any of that bold impact.

Beyond the Screen: Dye Sublimation for Apparel

Most of the time, I'm all about that classic screen printin' for Coco's Monkey gear. But hey, sometimes ya gotta mix it up! These white SPF shirts were the perfect chance to try dye sublimation. Yeah, it's got its quirks, but the upside? Unlimited colors! Which, let's be honest, is pretty darn cool.

Illustration Techniques: Adding Depth without Color Overload

This Coco's Monkey Racing shirt design called for some extra creativity! The goal was to create dynamic art without goin' overboard on the color count (keeps those printin' costs down, ya know?). So, we used techniques like halftone dots and line work to build depth and shading. A little bit of Adobe Fresco, a dash of Illustrator, and a pinch of Photoshop – and boom, there ya have it!

Illustration in Action

Ever tried to get a Boxer to pose for a portrait? Yeah, not exactly known for their stillness! Luckily, I had some great reference photos to work with. This one started with a curious pup, and with a little Photoshop magic, we transformed it into this speed demon ready to race!

Results & Impact: Defining a Local Icon

The final brand evolution successfully positioned Coco’s Monkey as a standout destination in the Key West retail landscape. By applying a consistent design strategy, we achieved:

  • Market Distinction: A unique visual identity that separates the boutique from standard tourist apparel through high-end graphic representation.

  • Scalability: A versatile logo system that maintains its integrity across everything from small product hangtags to large-scale storefront signage.

  • Brand Loyalty: A “local-first” aesthetic that resonates with both residents and visitors, fostering a sense of community and strength.

  • Selling Out of Race Shirts: All of those limited edition race shirts are a crowd favorite which sell out every year.
